Board approves paraprofessional, outreach interventionist and $183,000 special-education bus purchase

The Show Low Unified School District board approved three items tied to special education and student support: a new 32-hour paraprofessional position for a self-contained classroom at Whipple Ranch Elementary, an outreach interventionist position to be funded by the SIG grant for up to 10 after-hours hours, and the purchase of a new special education bus for $183,000 through a cooperative contract with Canyon State Bus.

Dr. Farnsworth explained the paraprofessional position is needed to meet an individual student’s IEP requirement if a student with a documented need moves into the district. Board discussion confirmed the district files Medicaid and that the director of special education would apply for a high-needs grant this year to seek additional reimbursement; administrators said higher state funding weights may apply for high-needs students.

On the outreach interventionist, administrators said the SIG grant permits compensating staff for up to 10 hours of after-hours outreach work (home visits, calling, mentoring). The board approved that position and confirmed the 10-hour maximum.

Miss Davis presented the transportation procurement. Administrators said purchasing the bus through a cooperative avoids the months-long bid process and that Canyon State Bus (a Bluebird chassis) is the chosen vendor. The board approved the $183,000 purchase and administrators outlined follow-up steps for delivery scheduling and purchase orders.

All three motions were approved by voice vote during the meeting.
