Board members spent the largest portion of the meeting discussing island branding and the feasibility of creating a signature event to support economic development.
Members argued that a consistent brand and talking points for Grand Island would provide a foundation for other initiatives โ including waterfront marketing, wayfinding, and annual festivals โ and would help the town better package economic-development proposals. Several members reviewed past local events (barbecue festivals, Winterfest, taste-of-Grand-Island, haunted park) as examples of events that drew crowds but required substantial volunteer and town support.
The board discussed options for proceeding without a paid consultant (several members said the board could draft an initial brand framework internally and then solicit broader community input), and noted that the town budget includes a line for an economic-development event. Members proposed near-term next steps: dedicate the November meeting to strategic conversations on branding and events, create subcommittees to scout partners and calendar gaps, and coordinate with the chamber and other stakeholders.
Board members emphasized the need to map calendar conflicts with established regional events, to recruit volunteers and outside partners to reduce staffing burden, and to consider an events calendar that highlights food, ecotourism and arts components. The board agreed to ask staff to resend meeting notes and the chapter of the Local Waterfront Revitalization Program (LWRP) cited as background so members can prioritize initiatives at the next meeting.
