City staff presented a conceptual plan for the Delwood Park renovation, describing a multi‑amenity update that staff said aims to deliver a “premium product” for the existing park.
Public works Director Garrett Houston outlined planned features including multiple pickleball courts (with the tennis court configured as multipurpose), a new basketball area, pavilion, expanded sidewalks and trail connections, new benches and site furnishings, upgraded playground borders, improved restrooms and new LED lighting. Houston said the design targets tournament capacity for pickleball and an improved overall park experience.
Funding and schedule: Staff said the park project is funded in part by a ballot measure allocation and noted an approximate $2,000,000 figure for this project within that broader allocation. The design is at concept stage; staff scheduled a community/neighborhood meeting at the Civic Center (05:30) and said the plan will go next to the park board for approval, followed by preparation of construction documents and a return to council for final authorization. Staff estimated construction could begin next spring, with construction documents expected in roughly two months.
Neighborhood concerns and next steps: Staff acknowledged creek maintenance and other community questions and said they will collect input at the neighborhood meeting and factor hydraulics and other items into later design phases. The project team emphasized focusing the current scope on the main park area while addressing ancillary items (for example a dog park) separately.
Why it matters: The Delwood renovation connects to the council’s livability and tourism priorities and is an example of a project that will flow from tonight’s strategic goal setting into the capital program. Staff asked for continued public engagement and said they will return to council for final approval after the park board and completion of construction documents.
