Mayor Ricardo Villareal read a proclamation recognizing August 2025 as the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley’s (UTRGV) 10th anniversary month. The proclamation cited UTRGV’s growth since 2015, noting more than 60,000 degrees awarded, expansion of degree programs, increased research expenditures, and recent or planned openings including the state’s first school of podiatric medicine (2022), a comprehensive academic cancer surgery center planned for 2025, and a school of optometry in 2027.
Lizette Galaviz, governmental relations assistant at UTRGV, accepted the proclamation on behalf of the university and thanked the council for the recognition. Galaviz noted the university’s enrollment of more than 34,000 students and cited rankings referenced by UTRGV staff, such as recognition for social mobility and value.
Council members and the mayor offered brief congratulations; the proclamation was followed by a short photo opportunity.
Ending: The city presentation acknowledged UTRGV’s regional presence and partnership and the council recorded the proclamation in the meeting minutes.
