A Littleton resident told commissioners on May 27 that he had gathered signatures opposing a proposed Costco fuel center with 32 gas pumps and asked the board to deny or relocate the facility because of health risks to nearby schools and elder care facilities.
Greg Sullivan, who identified himself as a Littleton resident, said the planned fuel center would be within about 500 meters of two schools and other community sites and presented a petition he said contains roughly 280 signatures. “We respectfully petition the Arapahoe County Board of Commissioners to deny or relocate the proposed Costco Fuel Center with 32 pumps,” Sullivan told the board, citing concerns about benzene exposure and asthma risks for children.
Sullivan said his materials estimate health‑related costs and requested that the county commission an independent health‑impact assessment and air‑quality study before permitting the project. He also asked county counsel to review a Montgomery County, Maryland ruling in a case involving a Costco fuel center, which Sullivan said denied a permit for a 16‑pump operation there.
Commissioners did not take immediate action on the petition during the meeting. County staff offered to accept the petition and accompanying materials for follow‑up.
