A neighborhood resident asked the Flint Board of Education to address trash and suspected encampments at the closed Cook School property at 500 Welch Boulevard.
The speaker said the school has been closed for several years and "become an eyesore in our neighborhood," and that neighbors have collected and bagged dumped trash that the resident asked the district to remove. The speaker told the board they had contacted the City of Flint blight office, which told them the school board was responsible for blight on district property. The resident said they left messages at two phone numbers given by the city and later left their contact information at the district administration building after being told they could bring the issue before the board.
"All we need is neighbors in the community. We wish that the school board would address our issues with [the] trash around the school," the speaker said at the public comment period, adding the location and asking only that the trash the neighbors have collected "at least be picked up before more is added to it."
Board members acknowledged the comment and moved on to the public‑comment agenda; the district did not provide an immediate response during the meeting. The resident noted that while law enforcement responses to unhoused people are separate, neighborhood volunteers have tried to keep the site tidy.
The Cook School site and the request for pickup were raised during the public‑comment period; trustees did not take formal action on the item at the meeting but the comment was placed on the record.
