Fairfield council advances planning for pickleball courts, ballfield and history path; geotech testing planned

Councilors agreed to pursue designs for pickleball courts and a baseball field. Council members said Sean is engaging contractors for the pickleball work and that Tyler or town staff can handle baseball-field planning and inspections. The council discussed the schedule and noted contractors expect about two weeks' notice before they would need final plans.
Sean told the council he would engage AGEC as a geotechnical engineer to test the topsoil that had been stripped from the construction area for arsenic and other suitability issues. "We're gonna test this topsoil that he stripped off to see what this arsenic is in it," a council speaker said. The plan, as discussed, is to fold suitable topsoil back over the prepared surface rather than hauling it off; council members said they expect the top three inches to be most likely suitable and that testing will determine whether the material can be reused.
The council also discussed a donated road base and grading for a "history path"; one contractor's bid for the path work was cited at about $105,000, and another firm was being asked for a competing bid to compare prices. Council members said the donation of road base and grading from a local contractor could reduce costs and, if weather allows, they could proceed this fall.
Council members agreed to continue moving the park items forward, including ordering a backstop, preparing the playground footprint and rolling into irrigation and other site work once grading and backstop installation are complete.

The council did not make any formal funding commitments at the meeting; members said they will follow up with bids, contractor schedules and testing results before committing to construction contracts.
