During other business, a staff member identified as Dudley reported that site work for the Stokes Eye Clinic joint venture has begun, including site preparation and occupancy of an existing warehouse as a staging area. Dudley said the first building expected is apartments; he also said there is potential for a hotel, commercial units and additional townhome-style brownstone units in future phases.
Commissioners used the discussion period to reiterate support for additional downtown housing, citing experiences from other cities and a downtown study the commission said identified a need for roughly 1,000 additional housing units over a multi-year planning horizon to support downtown commercial growth. Commissioners discussed the evolution of housing types—townhomes and mixed-use units—and said denser housing supports downtown businesses by providing walkable customers and patrons.
No formal actions accompanied the other-business discussion; commissioners thanked developers for participation and confirmed meeting logistics for November.
