The Englewood City Water and Sewer Board approved staff’s recommendation to authorize the first phase of the Union Avenue water main replacement project, a nearly 600‑foot run of new main between the South Platte River and the Waste Management facility.
Peter, director of South Platte Renew and the water utility, told the board the Union Avenue main is a high‑priority transmission line that has experienced 22 breaks over roughly 20 years. The board approved a contract with CNL, one of the city’s on‑call contractors, for $650,000 plus a staff‑managed contingency of $65,000 for a total project authorization of $715,000.
Peter said the work is intended to stay ahead of public‑works topside street projects and to reduce frequent breaks in a section of the system that feeds the western part of the city. He told the board staff will consider additional phases for other critical transmission mains as funding and priorities allow.
The motion to authorize the project passed by voice vote. Chair Moore called for the ayes and the motion carried. Staff will oversee the contract and report back as the construction phase progresses.
