Kootenai County approves temporary part-time front-desk staffing to cover hiring gap

Kootenai County commissioners approved a temporary part-time front-desk staffing arrangement Oct. 16 to cover a gap while newly hired applicants for a permanent front-desk position begin work.
Commissioner Duncan said that hiring is underway but some selected applicants cannot start for two to four weeks. She recommended authorizing a temporary part-time worker, up to 12 hours per week, funded from existing salary savings. "We may not need this position, but we do have somebody ready to fill it on a part time, I think up to 12 hours a week, and we do have the salary savings to cover it," Duncan said.
Commissioners moved and seconded approval of temporary staffing; the motion carried with three ayes. The county did not commit to hiring beyond the temporary period and said it will proceed with the permanent hires already in process.
The temporary hire was presented as a short-term operational measure to avoid coverage gaps at the Board of County Commissioners' front desk; no additional budget appropriation was requested at the meeting.
