Centreville, Md. — The Centreville Town Council on Oct. 16 accepted a report from the Board of Supervisors of Elections, administered oaths to two newly certified council members, elected Ashley Kaiser as council president and Jeff Kiel as vice president, and reappointed the town attorney and finance officer during its annual reorganization meeting.
The Board of Supervisors of Elections reported that, after a withdrawal left the Oct. 6, 2025 town election uncontested, it certified Frederick Buell and Fred McNeil as duly nominated and canceled the election under a charter amendment (resolution cited in the report). The board said it had verified candidates’ financial-disclosure forms through the Centreville Ethics Commission and found no errors or omissions. The council voted to accept the board’s report by voice vote.
The clerk of the circuit court administered oaths to the newly certified council members. Catherine B. Hager, clerk of the circuit court for Queen Anne’s County, read the oath required by Maryland law and certified that the two individuals swore to “faithfully and diligently” perform the duties of council member for the town of Centreville.
During the organizational business that followed, the council approved motions by voice vote to elect Ashley Kaiser as council president and Jeff Kiel as council vice president. The council also reappointed Sharon Van Emberg as town attorney and Karen Luffman as finance officer for the coming year; both reappointments were approved by voice vote.
Council members were assigned liaison roles to town boards and regional bodies. The council named Sandra Huffer as the council liaison to the Planning and Zoning Commission; Fred McNeil as the liaison to the Park Advisory Board; Frederick (Fred) Buell as the council’s economic development representative; Jeff Kiel as the town’s representative to the Queen Anne’s County Council of Governments (COG); and Council President Ashley Kaiser as the town’s representative to the Maryland Municipal League (MML). Town staff noted that other boards and commissions (ethics, personnel review, cemetery and others) are staffed by town employees rather than having specific council liaisons.
Outgoing council members were publicly thanked during the meeting for their service. New council members briefly introduced themselves and said they appreciated the orientation provided earlier in the week.
The meeting closed after a second citizens forum; a motion to adjourn passed by voice vote.
