Recreation staff told the Parks and Recreation Commission the department’s recent three‑day City Park festival drew an estimated 10,000 attendees and provided a schedule of upcoming community events.
Veronica Ramirez, assistant director of Recreation and Community Services, reported the weekend festival included a carnival, food and artisan vendors, live music, community booths and a 5K/10K run. Ramirez said the weekend’s run had 949 participants: 587 registered for the 5K, 204 for the 10K and 127 children in a free 1‑kilometer event.
Ramirez also announced the Montebello Chamber of Commerce State of the City event is scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 23, at 5:30 p.m. at the Bella Verde Golf Course clubhouse lawn; tickets are $75 per person. An upcoming family Halloween event — a haunted train ride, a giant inflatable maze, a puppet show, trick‑or‑treating stations and a costume contest — is set for Saturday, Oct. 25, at Grant Ray Park from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m.
Additional items listed by staff include a Día de los Muertos community altar and celebration on Sunday, Nov. 2, at the Juan Matias Sanchez Adobe Museum; a Veterans Day ceremony on Nov. 11 at 11 a.m. (preceded by a free pancake breakfast for veterans); a City Service Saturday cleanup on Nov. 15 along Lincoln Avenue with more than 100 volunteers already signed up; and a Winter Wonderland and tree lighting on Saturday, Dec. 6 at City Hall with activities scheduled from mid‑afternoon through an evening tree lighting.
Staff said most attractions at the upcoming Halloween event will be free of charge, with food as the exception, and that winter event sponsorship support includes Adventist Health White Memorial. Recreation supervisor Susan Peebles was credited by staff for organizing shuttle service for the City Service Saturday to aid volunteer participation.
No votes were required for these calendar items; staff asked commissioners to note the dates and help promote participation.
