The Montebello Parks and Recreation Commission unanimously elected Commissioner Oliver Jimenez as vice chair and filled two vacancies on its ad hoc committees at its Oct. 16 meeting.

The commission voted by roll call after a nomination and acceptance on the record. "I accept," Oliver Jimenez said after being nominated for vice chair. The vote recorded aye from Chairperson Lovano and all four other commissioners present.

The commission also appointed Erica Turner to the Arts and Culture Committee and Destiny Castaneda to the Programs Committee. Both committee assignments were made by nomination followed by roll-call votes and were announced during the consent portion of the agenda.

The commission’s staff explained the vice chair role during the meeting as assisting with facilitation, coordination and communication and stepping in for the chair when needed. Staff also noted the ad hoc committees are used to advise staff on recreation department matters; the Arts and Culture Committee reviews public‑art programs such as the city’s utility box art selections, and the Programs Committee advises on recreational programs such as sports and childcare offerings.

No additional conditions or amendments were stated at the time of the votes. There were no public objections or requests to reopen the nominations during the meeting.

The commission opened the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance, introduced two new commissioners — Destiny Castaneda and Erica Turner — and closed with brief staff reports and event updates.
