The Las Vegas City Art Commission discussed public art in parks at the Oct. 16 meeting, reviewing completed projects and current park-based public-art work and exploring ways to diversify art types and placement.

Mary Sabo and staff highlighted a series of recent park projects, including the Pro Park paint project at Doc Romeo Skate Park (2024) by Nico Rousen, a community-engagement mural at Police Memorial Skatepark completed with Meow Wolf, and Life Is Beautiful partnership installations at Doug Selby Park (2021) and Rotary Park (2023).

Staff noted current percent-for-art-funded projects in parks include the Centennial Hills Park environmental tile mural, the Here's Park tile mural project and the Wallaby Canyon Trailhead environmental public-art project. “If any of these projects spark questions, get in touch with the project manager,” staff said.

Commissioner DeSantis suggested expanding materials beyond murals to include mosaics for benches and other park features; staff confirmed the Centennial Hills and Here's Park projects are scoped specifically for artists who work in ceramic, mosaic or tile. Commissioner Portnoy proposed looking at banners and other elevated displays, and staff said that banner-style communications are often handled by the city communications office and cannot be funded through percent-for-art allocations.

Commissioners and staff discussed placement and conservation. Cleven noted the merger into the Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs makes coordination with parks maintenance easier, which staff said helps prevent moisture damage and ensures preservation. Staff said routine graffiti abatement and cleaning are being arranged for high-tag areas.

No formal action was taken; staff encouraged commissioners to recommend park locations and to contact project managers with suggestions for future proposals.
