Board reviews two draft school calendars; trustees to vote in November

A staff member identified as Mister Crick presented two draft school-year calendars for 2026–27 and 2027–28 during the Oct. 6 North Ridgeville City Board of Education meeting, with the board scheduled to consider approval at its November meeting.
Crick said both draft calendars follow the district's recent model of a slightly lengthened school day and compressed year. Students would begin on the third Thursday in August in both plans. The 2026–27 calendar (labeled “26–27” in the presentation) includes the district's typical Labor Day break, an October records day and a two-week winter holiday; the 2027–28 (“27–28”) plan shortens the winter break to eight days and is structured so the second quarter of the school year ends before winter holiday. Crick said that structure reduces student anxiety in the high school by allowing the semester start to coincide with the calendar after the break.
Crick said March and February include the usual professional-development and calamity-makeup considerations and that the 27–28 calendar contains an extra floating day to accommodate a leap year and potential makeup needs. The projected last student day would be May 19 for 26–27 and May 17 for 27–28; staff said the earlier end date on 27–28 is intended to assist the district’s planned move into a new high school during summer 2028 by allowing more time to transition materials and equipment.
Superintendent Prince, who spoke briefly, said the district aims to have the two-year calendars finalized next month and acknowledged the calendar committee included administrators and association members. Board members asked clarifying questions about the January records days and how holiday weekends affect later years; staff said they plan to bring the calendars back for final approval at the November meeting so the district can meet policy timelines.
The calendars will be on the Nov. 18 (regular meeting) agenda for second reading and approval. Staff described the presentation as a first reading.
