Chief Smith told the Public Safety Committee on July 22 that the Monkhouse Drive substation is expected to be handed over to the police department within the week, with functionality targeted by the end of the month.
Smith said the project—s remaining issues were condensation in a secure room and electrical-transfer switch security. He described a generator-transfer key arrangement that allowed someone to turn power off and that the stolen key had been recovered; staff are asking the contractor to provide a lockable solution. The chief said the building—s HVAC and condensation issues should be fixed quickly and that the department plans an open house after the space is functional.
On Kingston Road, staff said the site is a three-year lease (with possible extensions) and that contractor work to build four offices will start this week. The department reported other substation projects are in development: North Market had concrete poured and a Cedar Grove site is being prepared for bidding.
No ribbon-cutting or final opening dates were set beyond the target to have Monkhouse functional by the end of the month; staff said they will coordinate a public open-house announcement after punch-list items are resolved.
