Paducah approves $3 million entry-plaza modification for sports park; total project budget tops $70.6 million

The Paducah Board of Commissioners voted Sept. 15 to approve a not-to-exceed $3,000,000 contract modification with A & K Construction for the entry plaza at the Paducah Sports Park and separately approved related contract schedule and price changes for Sprinturf LLC, Avanti Solutions and Musco Sports Lighting.
City staff told commissioners the $3,000,000 entry-plaza amount is shared equally with McCracken County and that the sports tourism commission previously voted to support the modification. Amy Clark, a city project presenter, told the board: "we are sitting at if this is approved, we're sitting at $70,563,017 for the total project." Clark and others said the total figure is inclusive of the modifications approved at the meeting.
Officials said the entry plaza originally bid higher and the city and contractor reduced scope to reach the $3,000,000 not-to-exceed figure. The board also approved a 73-day extension and a $129,992.49 deduction to Sprinturf's contract, a 73-day extension and $6,088.42 price reduction for Avanti Solutions (the concessionaire), and a 73-day extension for Musco Sports Lighting. Staff said those extensions align contractor schedules and that some line items were direct-purchased to save roughly $420,000 in A & K's contract.
Funding sources and schedule: staff and the mayor said hotel-tax revenue earmarked for the sports tourism commission will be used first to service bonds issued for the project; additional city and county bond proceeds and prior project allocations (including dollars set aside from the 2020 bond issuance) also support the work. Clark said the city originally set aside $12.5 million from the 2020 bond package toward the project and that the city and county issued additional bonds to cover remaining costs.
Project timeline and outlook: staff said the project remains on track for a planned opening and that sports teams are already scheduled in 2026. The board was told the contractor schedule adjustments preserve a March 1 opening target and that project management staff will continue to report updates to the commission.
The commissioners voted unanimously on the contract modifications and related municipal orders.
