Board creates special-education LBD position and athletic stipends funded by school activity funds

The Madison County Board of Education on Sept. 25 approved several personnel actions: creation and ratification of one LBD (learning-behavior-disorders) teaching position and a set of athletic stipends drawn from school activity funds.

The board voted to create and ratify one LBD teaching position to serve students with significant needs. A board member noted the role is intended for "special needs kids who are on hold," meaning a need to provide direct services; the motion to create the position was moved and seconded and carried.

The board also voted to create and ratify two athletic site-manager positions at Madison Central, each carrying a $1,500 stipend to be paid from the school's athletic funds; the board noted the stipends come from school athletic accounts rather than the general fund.

Finally, the board approved two paid football assistant positions at Madison Central, each paid $1,177 from school athletic funds.

Motion and votes: The LBD position motion (agenda 4d) was moved by Miss Brock and seconded by Mr. Rutherford and carried. The two athletic site-manager positions (agenda 4e) were moved by Miss Burford and seconded by Miss Cobb and carried. The two paid football assistant positions (agenda 4f) were moved by Mr. Rutherford and seconded by Miss Brock and carried. Each motion passed by voice vote.

Why it matters: The LBD position expands the district's capacity to serve students with learning and behavior needs using general-fund staffing authority; the athletic stipends are funded from school-level athletic accounts, not the general fund, according to board remarks.
