Selectmen accepted Chief Mark Smith’s resignation with his last day set for Nov. 21. The board discussed how to advertise and fill the chief’s position and indicated a preference by some members to post internally first, gather resident input and then decide whether to open the search externally. The board agreed to collect public comment and to set a posting timeframe with public input; a timeline to post by Oct. 21 (one month advertising window) was discussed.
The board appointed Brandon Avery to the board of assessors by voice vote; Avery stated he was not interested in a full-time assessor role and expected to serve part time.
No specific appointment processes or interim staffing for the police chief were finalized at the meeting; the board said it will solicit feedback from residents and hold hours in the Selectmen’s Office to gather input.
