Gardner School Committee ratifies district improvement plan, accepts superintendent goals; committee receives program updates

The Gardner School Committee on Oct. 14 accepted the superintendent's goals and ratified the district improvement plan, both items brought forward from the committee's previous meeting.
"Motion made by Attorney Palerin, second by Ms. Cormier to accept the superintendent's goals as presented at our previous meeting," the clerk announced; committee members approved the motion by voice vote.
Committee members also voted to ratify the district improvement plan. The plan had been presented at an earlier meeting and the committee held a voice vote to confirm it at the Oct. 14 session.
Several informational reports were included in the meeting packet and received without substantive debate. The district reported 99 juniors and seniors participating in the early-college program and 20 students enrolled in a Monty Tech program that provides vocational weeks and related academics. The committee also heard that 10 students are in the carpentry program, 10 in the electrical program and 10 taking an automotive class at Mount Wachusett Community College.
Superintendent Dr. Pellegrino (identified in meeting remarks as the superintendent) summarized school-start activity and positive extracurricular results. "I'm very excited that our teams all won on, at Saturday's, Saturday's games," the superintendent said, and noted the golf team had clinched district playoffs for the first time in 12 years.
The committee also received an update that the student-run "Rise and Shine" coffee shop has reopened as a work-based learning opportunity, and that a college fair on Sept. 25 provided students with access to multiple college representatives.
The policy subcommittee reported it reviewed seven policies on Sept. 17 and moved four policies to second-reading; those first-reading policy identifiers included BD (annual budget), BDG (budget adoption procedures), EFD (school nutrition program charge policy) and JIC (student discipline). Committee members were told the policies would return for a vote at the subsequent meeting.
There were no executive sessions scheduled, and the committee set its next meeting for Monday, Nov. 10 at 6 p.m. in the council chamber.
