Forsyth County Human Resources on Oct. 20 briefed commissioners on a resolution giving notice of intention to reduce the salary, allowances and other compensation of a non‑incumbent sheriff who takes office the first Monday in December 2026, pursuant to North Carolina General Statute 153A‑92.
Shannon Hutchins, the county’s HR director, told commissioners the resolution would set an annual salary for a non‑incumbent sheriff taking office in December 2026 at $134,509.63. Hutchins said “The salary allowances and other compensation of an incumbent sheriff who is re‑elected in 2026 shall remain at the same level as of 07/01/2026. The salary allowances and other compensation for a non incumbent sheriff as designated herein shall take effect at the time the elected person takes office.”
A commissioner asked whether an incumbent who is re‑elected would remain at the current salary; Hutchins replied, “Yes, ma’am. He does.” Another commissioner described the resolution as routine and said the county does these items each election cycle to set filing fees for the elections office.
This was an informational briefing; the resolution is on the Oct. 23 agenda for formal consideration.
