The Shawnee County Board of County Commissioners voted unanimously to adopt Resolution No. 2025-83 vacating a portion of Southwest 100th and Ninth Street, a stretch of roadway between Southwest Topeka Boulevard and U.S. Highway 75 that county staff said has not been open to travel since highway improvements in the 1970s.

Jonathan Brezon of the county councilor’s office told the commission that Public Works concluded the cost to bring the road to travelable condition outweighs any public benefit. Brezon said notices were sent to adjoining landowners on both the Shawnee and Osage County sides, to Osage County officials, and to utilities; the county also published notice in the newspaper.

The board opened a public hearing; no members of the public spoke. Commissioner Aaron Mays moved to close the public hearing and approve the resolution; Commissioner Bill Rippon seconded. The motion passed 3-0.

The county councilor’s office will complete the legal steps to formally vacate the right-of-way.
