The Wilson School Board on Oct. 20 approved an interim allocation of 50 additional aide hours per week for kindergarten classrooms across the district and voted to appoint Abraham Moore as principal of Spring Ridge Elementary and Joshua Burkhart as assistant principal at Wilson High School.
Why it matters: Board members framed the aide-hour increase as a short-term, needs-based measure to address wide variation in kindergarten readiness and classroom support needs. Several trustees urged continued study and a possible expansion if the extra hours prove insufficient.
What the board voted on
The human resources package (items 6.1–6.3) included three actions: the appointments of Abraham Moore and Joshua Burkhart and approval of “an additional 50 hours per week district wide for kindergarten aid support.” Mrs. Casper moved the motion; Mr. Hart seconded. The roll-call vote was 9-0 in favor.
Board discussion and clarifications
Human resources committee chair Mrs. Casper told the board the committee reviewed a set of staffing recommendations and that the 50-hour allocation will be distributed based on reported need at each school. Superintendent Dr. Trickett said principals were asked to update a spreadsheet by a specified deadline to indicate where hours are needed; some classrooms currently show zero additional hours and those available hours will be reallocated to higher-need classrooms.
Board member Mr. Hart voiced concern that the 50 hours may be insufficient and asked the board to act quickly if more hours are required. “I don't think that's going to be enough and I just hope that we're able to be swift in decision making,” Hart said.
Trustee Dr. Kennedy described broader early-childhood readiness gaps discussed by district staff and outside experts, and recommended examining transitional kindergarten and other programmatic solutions. “Until we're ready as a nation to invest in birth to 5, we're always gonna have those kiddos in our doorstep in kindergarten that start at completely different places,” she said.
Implementation details and next steps
District staff described the plan as short term and needs-based. The HR team asked principals to return updated needs data by the stated deadline; the leadership team said it will return to the board if additional hours or staff are required. The hires of Moore and Burkhart followed a multi-round interview process and comprehensive reference checks, the superintendent said.
Ending
The board approved the items by roll call, 9-0, and welcomed the new administrators. Trustees said they will continue to monitor classroom needs and may recommend further staffing changes if the additional 50 hours do not meet demand.
