The Longwood City Commission on Sept. 15 approved two related franchise measures for solid-waste services.

Ordinance No. 25-22-73 extends existing nonexclusive commercial solid-waste and recovered-materials franchises for an additional 12 months. The ordinance lists multiple franchisees by name, including Container Rental Company, JJ's Waste and Recycling LLC, Orlando Paper Waste Paper Company Inc., Waste Connections of Florida Inc., Republic Services of Florida LP, Waste Management Inc. of Florida, and Waste Pro Florida Inc. The commission approved the extension following a public hearing and a motion by Commissioner Boney.

Separately, the commission approved Ordinance No. 25-22-74 to grant an exclusive franchise to Waste Pro Florida, Inc., for residential solid-waste and recycling collection services. The contract term approved in the ordinance is seven years beginning Oct. 1, 2025, with a possible four-year renewal by mutual agreement; the measure also approves customer rates included in the contract.

Staff addressed a practical question raised at a prior meeting about large industrial-size bags and debris removal. City staff said Waste Pro will provide special arrangements for oversized bags: a resident or contractor will contact Waste Pro to schedule collection, and Waste Pro will dispatch a different vehicle (described as a grapple truck in the record) to pick up those items as opposed to standard curbside collection.

Both ordinances were adopted by roll-call votes showing unanimous approval.
