Local education foundation awarded $50,000 to support district initiatives, seeks volunteer capacity

Carrie Norris, speaking in her capacity with the Transylvania County Education Foundation, told the board on Oct. 20 that the volunteer-run foundation received a $50,000 award from the Pisgah Health Foundation.
Norris described the foundation as a 501(c)(3) made up of volunteers that supports district programs including Backpack Buddies (holiday food packs for students), a teacher supply closet at Brevard High School, student scholarships and creative classroom grants. She said the foundation traditionally awards about $10,000 annually for classroom grants and that this year’s grant award positions the foundation to pursue a funded, paid position to support its work.
“We are made entirely of volunteers,” Norris said. “This grant is a huge one, and hats off to our leadership team that wrote the grant that received it.” She asked board members to help publicize upcoming fundraising events and said the foundation is actively recruiting members.
The foundation’s report noted upcoming events, the location of the teacher supply closet, and plans to pilot a Create, Build and Shine showcase of arts and career/technical education programs at Brevard College’s Porter Center.
