Local volunteer group Good Trouble Transylvania donates supplies for 86 teacher wish lists

Good Trouble Transylvania, a local nonpartisan civic group, presented results of a community drive to stock teacher wish lists during the Oct. 20 Transylvania County Board of Education meeting.
Andrea Hamilton, who described herself as heading the group’s education committee, said the campaign began in May and used school liaisons and spreadsheets to match sponsors to classroom wish lists. Coordinators said sponsors included neighborhood groups, local businesses and civic organizations.
“We had approximately 150, 145 to a 150 [sponsors],” coordinator Debbie Lanier told the board, and she later gave a total requested amount of $24,752.70 in supplies across the campaign. Lanier said 86 teachers participated and that Brevard Rotary sponsored additional classroom wish lists in two Rosman-area schools.
Lanier and other coordinators emphasized they did not handle sponsor funds directly; the project matched sponsors to teachers and relied on in-kind purchases. The group said it secured local media coverage from the Transylvania Times and a WLOS segment, and that community sponsors included White Squirrel Arcade, Highland Books, Pilates Boulevard and others.
Board members and audience members thanked the volunteers and school principals who helped coordinate on-site distribution. The group said it will meet with partners about sustainability for future school-year efforts.
