The Pittsboro Board of Commissioners unanimously adopted a resolution on Monday recognizing June 19, 2022, as Juneteenth.
Mayor Pro Tem Baldwin introduced the resolution, a statement in the meeting packet noting Juneteenth’s historical origins in Galveston and referencing federal recognition of the day. The resolution cites the Emancipation Proclamation, the 13th Amendment, and President Joe Biden’s June 17, 2021, signing of federal recognition for Juneteenth.
Commissioners voted to adopt the resolution during the meeting’s opening business. Commissioner Shipp seconded the motion; the board approved it by voice vote.
The text adopted notes the town’s encouragement that employees and residents use the day “to reflect and take stock of the progress made” and to work toward advancing freedom and equality. The resolution was entered into the record and carried without recorded dissent.
