City Clerk Felicia Bravo and staff updated the commission on Aug. 12 on planning for a City Hall museum/display space intended to celebrate Sunrise history, culture and civic life.
Bravo said staff cataloged 57 boxes of materials: 23 boxes of periodicals/newspaper clippings, 11 boxes of records warranting archival review, and the remainder containing photographs and memorabilia. She said some items may need archival preservation and that a portion of the city clerk’s proposed budget includes $5,000 for digitization; she also noted there is $10,000 in the general fund budgeting conversation that could support initial work.
Staff plans include: surveying Broward County municipalities to see how they staff and curate municipal displays; drafting a formal policy governing donations and acquisitions; issuing a request-for-information through purchasing to explore professional exhibit-design options; and inviting commissioners to review materials in the clerk’s office before a public workshop on vision and scope. Bravo cautioned that the City Hall space differs from a typical museum because of a two-story wall of windows (UVA/UVB exposure) and said protective display cases or portable panels may be necessary.
Commissioner Jacqueline Guzman and Commissioner Latoya Clark urged using the space sooner rather than later to showcase local artists and historical items. Staff said they will schedule one-on-one walkthroughs with commissioners and return with a report and timeline following those meetings.
