The City Commission of North Port proclaimed October 2025 as Domestic Violence Awareness Month at its Oct. 2 regular meeting, and a representative from the local service provider Spark outlined the agency’s range of survivor services.
"We refer them to our attorneys, go to the state's attorney's office with them, police department. Anything that they need, we help them with, and we also have a shelter in Sarasota that we can offer to our survivors," said Michelle, identifying herself as a Spark representative. She told commissioners the organization provides free, confidential services and court accompaniment.
The proclamation recited statewide and local reporting figures from 2020 and encouraged community awareness and prevention efforts. The document reads in part that domestic violence "is a serious crime that affects people of all ages" and urges citizens to engage in efforts to prevent it and help survivors connect with services.
The transcript does not record additional formal actions tied to the proclamation. Commissioners acknowledged the presentation and moved on to subsequent agenda recognitions.
