The City Commission unanimously directed the city clerk to add an agenda item for a future ceremonial meeting to present the key to the city to Bill Gunnan, long‑time executive director of the North Port Area Chamber of Commerce.
Commissioner Langdon introduced the item and described Gunnan’s role in expanding and professionalizing the Chamber’s business services, noting the Chamber’s growth from a small office to owning its own building and running free business training programs that help new small businesses. “I believe Bill Gunnan has had a major impact on the success of the city,” Langdon said.
Other commissioners praised Gunnan’s leadership and long service, calling him an “honorable guy” and “the glue that holds that organization together.” Several residents spoke in favor of the recognition during the public‑comment portion; Jill Luke and Debbie McDowell described his sustained advocacy for North Port businesses and his welcoming approach to members.
Commissioner Langdon moved to direct the city clerk to create the agenda item for the next ceremonial meeting; the motion was seconded by Commissioner Duval and passed 5–0. Commissioners specified holding the presentation at the next suitable ceremonial meeting, with one suggestion about scheduling after the October 2 meeting and aiming for the next ceremonial session.
What’s next: the clerk will prepare a ceremonial agenda item and staff will coordinate a presentation date and logistics for the key presentation.
