Mayor Rob Medina read a proclamation recognizing September as National Suicide Prevention Month in Palm Bay and presented it to a representative of the Space Coast Health Foundation.
Lisa Hickman, executive assistant to the president and CEO of the Space Coast Health Foundation, told the council the foundation operates the Children’s Advocacy Center, a Lifetime Counseling Center with licensed therapists and a Center for Collaboration. Hickman said the foundation’s data show 148 Brevard County residents died by suicide in 2023, the highest total in the last ten years, and urged the council to continue community outreach and education. “It is okay to not be okay,” she said, urging residents to seek help from family, friends or licensed mental‑health professionals.
The mayor signed the proclamation and encouraged community support for local mental‑health services and resources.
Ending: The proclamation directs residents to Space Coast Health Foundation resources; no council action beyond the ceremonial proclamation was required that evening.
