Denham Springs council approves consent items including equipment surplus, contractor payments, settlement and $1,000 holiday grant application

Denham Springs — The Denham Springs City Council on Oct. 14 approved a series of consent and routine business items including equipment surplus, contractor payments, a property-damage settlement and a $1,000 grant application for holiday decorations.
On the consent agenda the council approved minutes from the Sept. 22 meeting and adopted the monthly consent agenda for Sept. 1–30. The council approved surplus of a cascade air system (asset no. 10070) used to fill breathing air for SCBA units at the fire station and a Husky 60-gallon air compressor used by the street department; staff said both units are no longer serviceable.
The council approved final payment (retainage) of $19,880 to Blunt General Contractors LLC for the Spring Park Pavilion and approved payment of $13,683.68 to Arbor Construction for East Railroad Avenue drainage improvements. The council also approved change order number 2, increasing work on the vortex grit removal system rehab 2025 by $4,158 to L King Company LLC and a pay application for the same project in the amount of $148,824 to L King Company LLC.
Council authorized an MOU allowing use of a narrow strip of city-owned frontage for installation of safety bollards and a planter at a building entrance with property owners John and Michelle Cavalier.
The council approved a property-damage settlement agreement with Chakory Lee in the amount of $5,480.67 for a collision involving a city vehicle, and it approved the city's application for a $1,000 energy grant to support Christmas in the Village decorations; meeting discussion described the grant as requiring no local match.
The council also granted a short extension in the condemnation case for a structure at 908 South River Road to allow the owner time to complete repairs; staff and the owner discussed scheduling and paperwork and a date in early November was set for the next status check.
A request for a retailers Class A-G (general bar) alcohol permit for the business at 2603 South Brains Avenue, to be called Royal Casino and using low-alcohol beer sales only initially, was presented and approved. The applicant's paperwork was described as meeting state and city requirements.
Most items were approved on voice vote with all members present voting yes.
Items approved at the Oct. 14 meeting were routine finance, public-works and planning-adjacent matters; staff will carry out the administrative next steps such as publishing payments, updating asset lists and processing the grant application.
