Marshfield Utilities highlights youth apprenticeship video and expands apprenticeships across departments

Marshfield Utilities presented a quarterly strategic-plan update highlighting the utility’s youth apprenticeship program, including a recruitment video produced by two apprentices.

A utilities staff member said the program has been formalized and that two youth apprentices wrote, filmed and edited a recruitment video that the utility has shared with the Marshfield School District. The presenter said the program now offers apprenticeships in IT, human resources, administrative services, electric and water and that feedback from the district has been positive.

In a recorded segment shown to commissioners, an apprentice narrator said, “Marshfield Utilities is proud to be a locally owned, not for profit utility that provides safe and reliable water services to the community,” and explained the apprenticeship program gives students hands-on experience and exposes them to multiple departments.

Michelle, identified in the meeting as an administrative professional youth apprentice, told the commission she gained experience in human resources, finance and marketing and called the program “a tremendous asset for our field utilities and the community,” noting it provides mentorship opportunities for experienced employees and helps train the next generation of field workers.

Commissioners received the update as information only and did not take action; staff said they will continue outreach and use the video as a recruitment tool.
