Committee approves two speed‑limit reductions in Avon and Libertyville townships

The Public Works and Transportation Committee approved two ordinances on Oct. 8 to lower speed limits on county roads following township requests and speed studies.

Staff presented the studies showing the Drury Lane segment in Avon Township warranted reducing the posted limit from 35 to 30 miles per hour; the change will extend an existing 30‑mph zone so speeds are continuous through the segment. A separate speed study in Libertyville Township supported lowering a section of Oak Spring Road from 35 to 25 mph to match adjacent village jurisdictions and to address numerous driveways and nonmotorized crossings.

Committee members praised the reductions as safety improvements. Member Wasek noted that the Millennium Trail crosses Drury Lane and that even small reductions make crossings safer for cyclists and pedestrians. Member comments on Oak Spring Road also urged further pedestrian and bicycle accommodations in the corridor over time.

Outcome: Both ordinances passed by voice vote.
