The Economic and Workforce Development Committee voted Oct. 20 to approve an interlocal agreement with Alamo Colleges that committee members said will expand access to technical and trade training, including OSHA certifications, for local high school students.

Committee members framed the agreement as a workforce pipeline measure that connects students to in-demand construction and trades jobs. Councilmember Castillo thanked Alamo Colleges for the partnership and said the program helps students gain trade skills ahead of a local construction boom.

During a brief discussion a committee member asked for a breakdown of how many San Antonio residents participate in the Alamo Colleges’ technical and trades offerings; staff said they would follow up with those numbers. The item was on the consent agenda, a motion to approve passed and the committee recorded the motion as carried.

The committee did not record detailed vote tallies on the public transcript. No presentation was requested; the committee moved the item forward for approval after brief remarks of support.

Committee members said they want continued coordination between Alamo Colleges and district staff to connect more high school students to the program and to monitor enrollment and outcomes.

The committee moved on to its next agenda item after the vote.
