County council appoints and administers oath to Casey Ann Bates as Summit County sheriff

The Summit County Council on Oct. 8 appointed Casey Ann Bates to fill the vacancy in the office of Summit County Sheriff after receiving a formal nomination from the Summit County Democratic Party. The party certified Bates as its nominee following a delegate process to fill the vacancy created by Sheriff Frank Smith’s retirement.
The council moved and seconded a motion to appoint Bates; the motion carried on a voice vote. Bates then took the statutory oath of office administered in the council chambers and addressed the room briefly, thanking colleagues, public‑safety partners and her family. The county attorney administered the oath. Councilmembers and public‑safety representatives congratulated Bates on the appointment.
What happens next: Bates will serve the remainder of the unexpired term (through Jan. 1, 2027) and will be subject to standing electoral rules if she seeks election to continue in the office.
