Summary
Associate superintendents Maura Wyand and Deon Smith told the board Sept. 9 that the district's staggered first days went well, with higher elementary and kindergarten attendance than last year and generally improved bus service with some localized issues being addressed.
Associate Superintendents Maura Wyand and Deon Smith reported to the Roseville Area School Board on Sept. 9 that the district's first days of school were largely successful, with positive reports on student attendance, welcome activities and transportation.
Wyand and Smith said multiple sites staged intentional welcome activities, student leadership was visible on day one at several schools, and staff observed “innovation, excellence, and equity” in early activities. They noted that several schools used upperclassmen and student leaders to greet younger students and that community volunteers and staff contributed to a strong start.
On enrollment, the presenters said elementary attendance was higher on the first day than a year ago and kindergarten enrollment rose. In the transcript Wyand said, “From the elementary level... more came on the first day than a year ago. We also had a higher amount of kindergarten students enrolled.” The presenters said secondary enrollment felt strong based on early recollections.
Board members asked about the new bus system. Presenters and other staff reported broadly positive impressions: buses were “on time in the morning,” drivers and routes showed improvement over the previous year, and on-site staff from the bus provider (referred to in the transcript as "Schminnysons") assisted with routing and safety. The presenters acknowledged a few localized “pocket areas” with issues and said the district and provider are working on adjustments.
The report highlighted other items observed during visits: inclusive playground fundraising and phased installation at Parkview Center School, student-built house program at the career/technical site, and community donations supporting students. Board members and staff described welcome-week events, a keynote speaker at a district opening, and multiple school visits by board members.
No formal action was taken; the presentation was a non-action report to inform the board and district community.
