Board approves revised public data policy, will spell out MGDPA acronym

The Roseville Area School Board approved changes to Policy 7.22, Public Data and Data Subject Requests, during the board’s Sept. 9 meeting and directed staff to spell out the MGDPA acronym.
Director Kenny McCarthy presented the second reading of the policy and said the revisions reflected feedback from the Aug. 19 first reading. Revisions included listing types of data and data requests in section 1, clarifying language about confidential data in section 3.1, identifying the responsible authority in section 3.14, and removing the word “responsive” from section 4.2.0.4 to make the language clearer.
Director Galligan requested that the acronym MGDPA be spelled out in the policy text; a board member moved to approve Policy 7.22 with that addition and the motion was seconded. The board approved the policy by voice vote with all members signaling “aye.”
At the meeting staff said some sections mirrored the MSBA model policy and they recommended keeping separate subsections where the model policy reflects nuanced differences between types of data requests. The board did not direct additional edits beyond spelling out MGDPA.
The policy change will be incorporated into district practice for responding to public data requests and data subject requests. The board did not record any votes against or abstentions on the motion in the transcript.
