Norwalk Board votes 5-4 to extend Superintendent Estrella's contract after heated public comments

The Norwalk Board of Education voted 5-4 Tuesday to approve a one-year extension to Superintendent Dr. Estrella’s employment contract after an extended public-comment period in which dozens of parents, teachers and residents urged the board either to delay the vote until after the budget and election season or to proceed.

The vote capped a night of repeated public criticism about the agenda’s wording and the board’s communication. Speakers at the meeting said a board agenda item listed as “possible action on contract matter” was vague and left residents uncertain whether the superintendent’s contract would be discussed. Multiple speakers said they learned of the vote only through social media or late notices and urged the board to delay any extension until after the fiscal year and upcoming elections.
