Utah County files aggravated‑murder charges and notifies intent to seek death penalty in Charlie Kirk killing

Utah County Attorney Jeff Gray announced Wednesday that he has filed a criminal information charging Tyler James Robinson, 22, with aggravated murder and related counts in the Sept. 10 fatal shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk at an outdoor event at Utah Valley University in Orem, and that the county will file a notice of intent to seek the death penalty.

"The murder of Charlie Kirk is an American tragedy," Utah County Attorney Jeff Gray said at a press conference. "I am filing a criminal information charging Tyler James Robinson, age 22, with the following crimes." Gray read the list of seven counts and later said, "Also, following the press conference, I am filing a notice of intent to seek the death penalty."

Gray said the information alleges Robinson intentionally or knowingly caused Kirk's death and included an aggravating allegation that the defendant targeted Kirk based on Kirk's political expression and knew children were present.
