The Lucas County Board of Commissioners voted Sept. 16 to approve annexation petition 2025-2, transferring one parcel in Sylvania Township into the City of Sylvania following a public hearing and review under the Ohio Revised Code.
At the hearing, Leslie, the agent for the petitioner, said the property owner sought annexation to access city services not provided by the township. County engineer representative John Perrell told commissioners the annexation was a routine, regular petition that met technical requirements and fell inside the existing agreement between Sylvania Township and the City of Sylvania. Perrell noted that although an engineer's report mentioned an “island,” the legal restriction on islands applies to expedited annexations and would not block a regular annexation.
Commissioner Pete Gerken moved to approve the petition. The clerk recorded roll-call votes in favor from Commissioner Gerken, Commissioner Lopez and Commissioner Cabecki; the motion carried and the annexation was approved.
The hearing record indicates legal notice for the public hearing was published by the petitioners’ agent in the Toledo Blade on Sept. 4, 2024, as required by the Ohio Revised Code. No opposing testimony was recorded on the sign-in sheet during the hearing.
