The New Iberia City Council approved contracts under a ‘One Block at a Time’ housing rehabilitation initiative, awarding painting, window-shutter and handicap-ramp contracts and discussing how alternates will be handled as funds allow.
Council awarded a painting contract to Minville Lumber (low bidder, unable to attend) for seven houses; council members said the work includes painting plus some siding and sill repairs. A separate contract to L & L Erectors was awarded for window shutters and five handicap ramps (two houses to receive operable shutters and five to receive ramps). Council members said roofing work previously contracted came in under budget, leaving available funds the city intends to apply to other alternates.
Officials noted the painting package overran the line-item estimate by about $41,000, but staff said overall program money remains because roofing bids came in cheaper than budget. Council members asked that staff provide a district-level list of alternates to ensure promised households receive work if funds remain. One council member asked for caution before committing any additional award money so that change orders elsewhere do not exhaust the pot.
Council members also discussed contractor diversity and bid variance; staff said the selection followed the low-bid process and noted some bidders were new. Council asked staff to return with a status on alternates and remaining funds after contracts proceed.
