Sumner to accept $203,000 CDBG award for senior center flooring and partitions

Sumner’s Community Services Director Derek Berry told the City Council Sept. 22 that Sumner has been awarded $203,000 in Community Development Block Grant funds, administered through Pierce County, to replace hard-surface flooring throughout the senior center and to convert existing partition walls into motorized partitions.
Berry said the city applied in mid-2024, Pierce County handled federal processing, and the city received formal paperwork the prior week. The grant covers replacement of flooring in the kitchen, hallways, main room and bathrooms, and funding to convert the center’s partition walls into motorized units. Berry said the award is a reimbursable grant and that the item will appear for formal acceptance at the Oct. 6 council meeting.
Council members expressed support for keeping the senior center functional and noted the award aligns with budgeted capital needs. Berry said the work was included in the city budget and that the grant timing resolved paperwork needed to receive reimbursement.
No council vote was taken during the study session; staff will present formal acceptance on the Oct. 6 consent agenda.
