Platte County reports record turnout and 90–100 tons collected at county cleanup

Platte County public works officials reported on Sept. 22 that the county's recent cleanup event drew a record turnout and produced an estimated 90–100 tons of collected waste.

Bob Heim, public works director, said about 600 patrons participated and the effort used 29 dumpsters, 27 of which were completely full. Heim estimated the haul at "somewhere between 90 and 100 tons of trash," and said the event also yielded about three quarters of a semi-trailer of tires and large numbers of white goods such as dishwashers, washers and dryers. Heim said many bicycles collected were sent to Lansing Correctional Facility where they are disassembled and reassembled for distribution to children, and that pallets of TVs go to Leavenworth where precious metals are extracted and plastics recycled.

Heim described the weekend as "very successful" and said the number of collection sites has increased over time to 10 locations. No policy changes or additional county spending were proposed during the announcement; the comments were informational.
