The West Windsor Environmental Commission told the council on Sept. 29 that the township has been awarded a silver-level certification by Sustainable Jersey, recognizing 37 actions across 11 categories for a total of 400 points. The commission said the achievement will be recognized Nov. 18 in Atlantic City.
"Congratulations. We are pleased to announce that West Windsor Township has been awarded silver level certification," said Ephraim Books, chairman of the Environmental Commission, during the public-comment portion of the meeting. He credited the township's Green Team and the work of multiple departments for the score and said the commission plans to expand projects, particularly in energy.
Mayor Andrea and council members publicly thanked the commission and volunteers for the sustained work required to meet Sustainable Jersey standards. Officials described the certification as a review of municipal initiatives over multiple subject areas — energy, land use and transportation, waste, community outreach and more — and noted the application assesses specific projects and supporting documentation across those categories.
Council members noted the certification process is intensive and commended volunteers who managed documentation and implementation. Township staff and council said forthcoming work will include additional sustainability planning and implementation of specific environmental projects. The mayor also noted related projects that the engineering division and environmental commission are discussing, including ordinances on non-grass/pollinator gardens and other local sustainability measures.
No formal council action was taken at the meeting beyond public recognition; the Sustainable Jersey recognition will occur at the organization's November awards event.
