South Norwalk Recreation Center progress: tours planned, programs expanding and space still under construction

City Parks & Recreation staff provided a construction update on the South Norwalk Recreation Center at the Oct. 8 meeting and said the facility is close enough to preview that the department will schedule member tours in coming weeks.
Robert Stowers said much of the drywall is in place and the gym footprint is largely visible though some final enclosure work continues. Staff said the gym is large and that some initial decisions about seating/bleacher capacity remain under discussion; committee members asked about increasing bleacher rolls for additional spectator capacity.
Programming and community use Stowers and committee members discussed expanding programming—volleyball, indoor tennis, pickleball, basketball and winter sports were among cited offerings—and adding training such as CPR courses in partnership with the Red Cross or other health partners. Staff said the facility will have space for such classes once construction is complete.
Tours and public meetings Committee members asked whether future committee meetings could be held at community locations; staff said the new rec center would be an option once construction advances further and that the committee will be invited to a site tour within a few weeks to a month.
No vote was taken; the committee received the update and requested follow-up on bleacher capacity and program scheduling.
