Public Works committee approves road-restoration increase, hears tree-operations and capital-project updates

Contract amendment for roadway restoration: Committee members authorized the purchasing agent to increase the purchase order for the first amendment of the April 9, 2024 agreement with Burns Construction Company for Project PM2024-2 (permanent roadway repairs and surface restorations) by an amount not to exceed $150,000. Wilbur Duran, permit engineer who manages the roadway-restoration contract, said the work covers trench repairs performed by private utilities and that the increase will finalize several outstanding trench restorations. The motion passed unanimously.
Tree operations report and reporting questions: Chris (tree operations) told the committee that the July-to-August reporting period included 51 removals and 53 safety prunings in July and subsequent removals and prunings after a wind/rain event. A committee member raised detailed questions about how those sums are tallied against a longer backup listing, noting apparent mismatches between summary totals and the itemized pages. Chris said many entries originate from service-request workflows tied to Cityworks and that staff would follow up with an itemized accounting and a PDF of the underlying work orders.
Major projects update: Public Works staff gave progress reports on several projects: - Grumman Avenue: paving largely complete; sidewalks and punch-list items remain. - West Avenue: contractor reclaiming road; milling and paving planned; contractual completion for parts of project set for Dec. 15. - Flax Hill Road: western segment sidewalks installed; milling to begin next week with paving to follow, weather permitting. - West Cedar Bridge: substructures and arches are in place and the project remains on schedule for a Dec. 15 completion.
Staff also noted temporary staging and material piles associated with active projects will be removed shortly as crews wrap individual contracts. Committee members asked staff to continue public outreach about detours and construction timing.
Ending: The committee thanked staff for an open-house outreach event and for accommodating neighborhood meetings; staff agreed to provide the requested itemized tree-work accounting and to report back on scheduling for the listed paving and bridge projects.
