The Larimer County Board of County Commissioners on Oct. 7 approved a proclamation recognizing Indigenous Peoples’ Day on the second Monday in October (Oct. 13, 2025), citing local consultation and the county’s intent to encourage awareness of indigenous history and culture.
Assistant County Manager Laurie Kadridge told the board the proclamation was modeled on the City of Loveland’s language and reviewed by indigenous people in the area and the county’s citizen advisory board. Commissioner Jody Shattuck McNally said members of the county’s community advisory board with deep local indigenous roots contributed to the language and that the county intends to coordinate with tribes and tribal practices where relevant.
The proclamation text referenced the ancestral homelands of tribal nations including the Arapaho, Cheyenne and Ute and acknowledged forced displacement and historical harms. It also referenced the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP) and encouraged local institutions and county departments to strengthen relationships with indigenous communities and support educational events.
Commissioners approved the proclamation by a 3–0 vote; the board paused for a photo. County staff noted there was not a tribal delegation present at the meeting to receive the proclamation and said the county would share the document with community partners.
