Jones County commissioners on Oct. 7 praised animal‑services staff and local rescue organizations for their work and discussed whether to issue a request for proposals (RFP) for veterinary services.
Commissioners and staff said the animal‑services operation has seen recent organizational changes and that the county is close to hiring a new director. Commissioner remarks repeatedly recognized employees and rescue volunteers for stepping up during staffing shortages. "We've recognized employees that step up, particularly when we're shorthanded," one commissioner said.
The board discussed whether to advertise an RFP for veterinary services now or wait for a new director to start. Several commissioners said they preferred holding off until the new director is in place so the incoming leader can participate in vendor selection. No formal motion to issue an RFP was approved; one commissioner moved to place the item on hold and the board voted to postpone the item.
