Multiple city departments reported community-engagement activities and facility updates at the Aug. 8 council meeting.
Police and fire leaders said National Night Out and a related Touch-a-Truck event drew large crowds. Fire Chief Kramer announced an open house at the new fire station on Oct. 22 at 10 a.m., with a dedication event planned later the same day, and thanked staff for construction progress and preparations. The police department said its new marine vessel has arrived and staff are conducting operational checks before placing it into service.
Public Works staff described new smaller collection vehicles recently placed in service that they said allow safer access to constrained neighborhoods; they presented the trucks at the community event and said the vehicles are intended to improve service in tight urban areas. Public Works Director Dean Urban (introduced in the meeting as Director of Public Works and Utilities) said the smaller vehicles provide safety and access improvements and that crews used the event to demonstrate their capabilities to children and families.
Council members praised the events as opportunities to increase community visibility of city services and to strengthen relationships between staff and residents.
Ending: Department leaders said the new facilities and equipment will be brought fully online following final inspections and that additional community events are planned.
